What Do Bananas Symbolize In The Bible?

Believe it or not, scripture mentions the word banana not at least once in the entire Bible. However, there are lots of meanings and symbolisms attached to bananas right from their origins to how we interact with them today. There is also significance of bananas in Christian dreams and interpretations which is meaningful to look at.

Symbol of Self-Destruction

Symbol of Self-Destruction

Wickedness has no place in God’s kingdom. The Bible is clear on what shall happen to those who do evil or oppress others.

In the Book of Psalm 37, the Bible speaks of the bullies or the bad guys and what is install for them. It also speaks of the righteous, what they do and what their end will be.

In Psalm 37:14-15 (The Message interpretation):

“Bullies brandish their swords, pull back on their bows with a flourish. They’re out to beat up on the harmless, or mug that nice man out walking his dog. A banana peel lands them flat on their faces – slapstick figures in a moral circus.”

This passage of scripture tells us to be satisfied with what God is doing in pour lives and in due time, all will work well for us.

There is a tendency to be agitated whenever something doesn’t go according to our wishes or when we see wickedness ruling the world uninterrupted.

Instead of having discontented spirits and opening ourselves to lots of temptations, we should remember that God is watching both the righteous and the wicked.

Inasmuch as the ungodly men may seem to prosper from ill-gotten resources, God himself will punish them by handing them over to their evil desires.

The banana peel which is also referred to as their own swords in other Bible versions, represents the self-destructive nature of evil people.

However much they brandish their swords and pull back on their bows, the righteous will outclass them in due course.

Symbol of Prosperity

The Bible likens a person who delights and meditates on the word of God like a tree that is planted by the water side which brings forth fruit in its season.

The Bible does not specify the kind of fruit but generally it symbolizes prosperity. In fact, the verse ends by saying that whatever such a person does, always prospers.

The prosperity that is mentioned here is that which is godly and holy. Looking at the banana tree and visualizing it planted at the end of a riverbank or water body, you can imagine how healthy and fruitful it becomes. Much like other plants, the banana tree is seasonal.

In Proverbs 8:1-20, the Bible also mentions about a fruit and in this case, it is the fruit of wisdom. It describes it as honor, riches, prosperity, and enduring wealth.

This could refer to both earthly prosperity and the riches that have been stored for us in heaven.

A Symbol of One’s Labor

The Bible is very straight in how it addresses the outcome of a person’s actions. What you do or do not do will have certain consequences in your life.

In Psalm 128:2, the Bible says,

“You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands; you shall be blessed, and it shall be well with you.”

Whatever the fruit, it symbolizes the outcome of something. As you grow bananas, the labor that you put in the growing season will be manifested in the size of the fruit.

If you do not plant a lot, do not expect to harvest in plenty. On the other hand, if you take care of your plants, water them well, and fertilize them well, the outcome will be clearly visible to all in the size of the fruit or harvest.

In Proverbs 1:31, the Bible also says,

“they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.”

In this respect, the fruit or outcome is used negatively to warn evil schemers.

The will of God is that we walk in the spirit and whatever fruit we yield will be in accordance with the spirit of God. Such can only happen when we are obedient to God.

A Symbol of Path to Maturity

A Symbol of Path to Maturity

In the Christian context, dream interpreters often associate dreams of raw bananas with immaturity. In the course of a person’s life, they go through different levels of maturity, each marked by the ability or inability to make certain decisions.

When you dream of raw bananas, it means that whatever situation you are in, whether career, family, or spiritual walk, you are still maturing up.

Therefore, you must be persistent in what you do and do not hesitate to conquer things along your way. In doing so, your ability to make sound decisions will improve as you graduate from one level to another.

Symbol of Bad Company

This symbolism of bananas is also drawn from dream interpretation. If you dream of a rotten banana, it could mean that the company you are keeping is leading you down a wrong path.

You need to review your circle of friends and the influence they have on the decisions you make. It is a wake-up call that not everyone in your life is contributing positively.

There are very poisonous people whose points of view can affect your life negatively. Take the necessary steps and dissociate yourself from such people so that you can have your life back on track.

Conclusion

Symbolisms can vary from one context to another and that includes those of bananas. Depending on the context, they could be positive or negative.

For instance, ripe bananas in almost every context mean good things. On the other hand, banana peels, raw bananas, or rotten bananas have negative connotations.

Before jumping into what bananas symbolize in the Bible, you need to understand your context as that could influence your interpretation.

The Bible is never silent about anything. As for bananas, the Message Bible carries a verse that out-rightly mentions the fruit. However, throughout the Bible, there are certain silent references that can as well be matched to bananas.
